hi, can you watch my kids this afternoon? i`ll be back in a month.
2014-12-10 @ 9:46 a.m.

so boy's kind of boss (not really, he's just kind of the go-to guy for this thing they're doing) asked him and this other guy boy often works with to come over and help him finish this addition on his house.

boy is like okay cool, you can help me build a deck on my house in a couple years, haha.

so he agrees to help after work. every day he wakes up at fucking 4am, then he goes up there to work (remember, his work is 2 hours north EACH WAY every day), gets off of his exhausting physical labor job and drives like 45 minutes east of our home, does more exhausting physical labor at this guy's house for 4 hours, then comes 2 hours home and does it all again the next day.

after like the 2nd day of doing this he tells me that this addition is actually HUGE. he says, this is going to take a LONG time. and i'm like ... uhh, okay? are you getting paid for this? and he's like, no, i was assuming we were doing it as a favor.

so then after a couple more days of this, he says that this guy keeps adding stuff on, finding new spots, etc. and i said, so like, how much would you charge for this if it were one of your jobs? and he said, at least $x,xxx. and i was like, WTF!? and this guy never mentioned anything about paying you??

at the point this conversation happened, he had already spent a full week and a weekend day doing this. so when i followed that up by saying, "and how much more do you have to do?" and he gave me this totally horrified face, i was like seriously man, what the fuck!

listen, i'm all about helping friends out and everything. but there is a huge difference between asking someone to do a favor, and exploitation! this guy KNOWS how far away boy lives, what he does for a living (remember, he works with him!), he does NOT provide him any fucking dinner, any gas, or anything. in total, this will take almost 3 whole weeks of boy's PERSONAL time to do this. how could you be a decent person and really think that it is okay to not compensate him OR the other guy in any way at all?

boy calculated it out and said okay, if we made it all nice round numbers and rounded down to x, then the other guy and i split that, x/2 would be fair. if [boss] is a piece of shit, then he'll say x/2 for the whole project, so i wouldn't be happy about it, but i would take (x/2)/2.

so the next day after we had THAT conversation, boy said he went in to work and saw the guy who was getting screwed along with him, and the guy came up and immediately was like "soooooooooooooo has [boss] told you how much he's paying us yet?" and boy was like uhhhhhhh, lol? i assumed we were working for free. and the guy was like fuck that! he too realized that this was an insane "favor" to ask of anyone. so the other guy asks [boss], "so, what's up with that?" and [boss] says, "oh don't worry, i got you guys."

............... mmmmmmmkay.

so they let that go several more days. now we're well into week 2, and it's yesterday. boy goes into work and the other guy was like listen man, today i'm going to actually say something to him. before he could do so, other guy's brother who also happens to work with all of them had heard about how much work they'd done for free and was also offended, so he actually says in front of many people, "so how much did you decide you're paying [boy] and my brother for all this work they're doing at your fucking house?" and [boss] awkwardly laughed, so other guy chimed in "i was thinking about $xxx each," and [boss] laughs again and says something that insinuated that he never had any intention of paying them at all.

can you even fucking believe this guy? boy and the other guy just wanted to say fuck you man, finish it yourself, but the promise of some money is enough to make them finish it.

i wanted to tell you all of that first so you could form your own opinion of [boss]. i always try to be objective in any situation. however, here is some backstory:

late summer, [boss] has a BBQ at his house to which he invites boy, other guy, and assorted co-workers and friends. at this BBQ, he's showing everyone the addition, particularly co-workers.

also at this BBQ, he asks boy and a couple other guys if they will come and help him put up the siding on the addition some weekend. on the weekend that the siding needs to be done, boy gets up at like 6am and goes up there to find other guy and no one else who said they would help. spends all day, receives nothing but a handshake and some shitty pizza.

between siding weekend and the beginning of addition work, [boss] was like blowing up boy's phone, just calling "to chat."

so, you know, maybe there's someone out there who doesn't find this suspicious, but as they say, i have a bridge to sell you. this guy sounds kind of like a shady asshole to me. kind of like a guy who's just pretending to be your friend so he can get a lot of free work done on his house by expert tradesmen. but maybe i'm just old and cynical.
