guys, i was fucking totally freaking out about this boy and speeding tickets thing. when it first happened (a month or so ago) i had called my mom's lawyer about the issue (i wrote about it last time), and like i said, he quoted us $3500 at a MINIMUM, saying "you'd be giving me $3500 and an impossible task." when i called him a few weeks later to update him on developments, he said, "you should probably try to get $5000 just in case anything comes up."

i told boy this and he was totally freaking out, and so was i. that's a sum of money that we simply do not have. and if we were to take it out of retirement, pension, whatever, it would just be so devastating. you know, you don't contribute to things like that on a 1:1 basis. it doesn't just go in, and immediately you have that amount of money just in case. that's what savings accounts are for, and ours is empty. so because of his stupidity, he would have been looking at so much extra work. so many more hours doing the thing he hates doing.

i've been so stressed and upset about this, and how far it was going to set us back. i told boy to make an appointment with the union to try to get the loan paperwork in order, because we were going to need a shitload of money. he, in addition to requesting the paperwork, made an appointment with an attorney that was suggested to him by his [higher-up], who said, "when you make the appointment, be sure to tell them that you are 'a friend of [higher-up].' we take care of our own."

so boy goes to this law office yesterday and meets with these partners, and he tells them the whole thing, takes his driver's abstract and tickets and everything, and they're like, yeah, we can probably make this mostly go away for $1500. and then one of the other partners, who is sitting in on the meeting, says, "whoa whoa! this kid is a friend of [higher-up]. we can do better than that. how about $900? can you afford that?"

so he's like, uh, fuck yeah! in two weeks he has a side job that he quoted for that exact sum. so it'll work out perfectly. so he's feeling so much more relieved, and he says, well then i guess i'll be back in contact with you when the MVC (motor vehicle commission) hearing comes up so we can see if they'll be willing to shorten the length of my suspension. and one of the partners is like, whoa whoa whoa! who said your license was going to be suspended? we gotcha, buddy.

huge sigh of relief. huge. huge. i'm still pretty wound up, because the court date is in a little over a week, but for now, i'm at least able to sleep at night again.

so we'll see. but please, boy, stop doing stupid shit to us. neither of us can handle any more stress.
